Do I Need a Root Canal?

The only way to know if you need a root canal is to meet with Dr. Nayak for an appointment. He will take diagnostic images using our CBCT scanner and discuss your current symptoms to determine if any of the following issues are present:
- Tooth pain that will not go away
- Increased and prolonged tooth sensitivity
- Inflammation and tenderness near the tooth
- Small, pimple-like growths on the gums near the problem tooth
- Tooth discoloration
What Happens During a Root Canal?

You will be recommended for a root canal should we find that the pulp, which is located in the innermost layer of your tooth, is infected or badly damaged. The process requires that you receive local anesthesia to numb your mouth and prevent any pain.
Once Dr. Nayak is assured that you are comfortable, he will enter the tooth through the crown using specialized instruments to make a small hole. He will then begin to clear out the various root canals and pulp chamber, removing the infected pulp, before sanitizing the tooth. A biocompatible substance known as gutta-percha will then be used to fill in the space previously occupied by the pulp, and the tooth will be sealed off to prevent reinfection.
A custom-made dental crown will be crafted and placed over the treated tooth so that it remains protected over time.
The Benefits of Getting a Root Canal

Although root canals tend to have a bad reputation caused by misinformation, they are essential when it comes to saving natural teeth. Some of the most valuable benefits you can expect when receiving a root canal include:
- A procedure that eliminates the pain by removing the infection (the cause of the discomfort).
- The chance to save your natural tooth and avoid the costly and timely requirements of receiving and maintaining a replacement.
- The opportunity to enjoy better oral health.
- A restoration that looks natural and allows for greater use when eating and speaking.
- A cost-effective solution, as opposed to the upkeep that is required with tooth replacement.
- A service that boasts a high success rate when completed by a trained and trusted dental professional.
Understanding the Cost of Root Canals

Wondering about the cost of root canal treatments in Warrenton? We understand – it’s only natural to want to know how your dental care could affect your budget. Our team will do everything possible to help make your root canal more affordable, and while we can’t give you an accurate estimate until we’ve performed an oral exam, you can learn more about the factors that could affect your expenses below. Don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any questions!
Factors That Can Affect Root Canal Cost
Not all root canals are exactly the same. Depending on the type and location of the infected tooth, your treatment could cost more or less. This is simply because some teeth (like molars) have more complex anatomy. It’s also important to keep in mind that you’ll likely need to top your treated tooth with a crown, which will involve additional expenses.
Is it Cheaper to Pull My Tooth?
In terms of upfront costs, it is cheaper to get a tooth extracted than a root canal. However, there are many reasons we don’t recommend doing so. For one, it’s much better for your oral health and function to preserve as much of the natural tooth structure as possible. And while extractions are remarkably safe, keep in mind that every tooth is embedded in your jawbone. Pulling them out is going to be rough on the surrounding bone and tissue.
Basically, preserving your pearly white with a root canal is well worth the small difference in cost compared to an extraction.
Does Dental Insurance Cover Root Canals?
Most dental insurance policies do offer partial coverage for root canal treatments. How much you receive will depend on whether your plan classifies a root canal as a “minor” or “major” restorative procedure. Don’t worry – if you’re not sure how much coverage to expect, our team can review the details of your policy and confirm your benefits.

Root Canal FAQs
How Much Pain is Normal After a Root Canal?
Remember, your mouth will be thoroughly numbed before the procedure to ensure you don’t feel any pain while we work to eliminate the infection. After a few hours, it will begin to wear off (which will be long after you leave our office). While it’s normal for soreness and sensitivity to arise, there are several ways you can alleviate symptoms like these so the healing process is considerably more comfortable, including rinsing with warm saltwater periodically, using a cold compress, and taking OTC pain medication as directed.
Can I Take Antibiotics Instead of Getting a Root Canal?
No, antibiotics are not a suitable replacement for root canal treatment. The reason for this is simple: the medication travels through the bloodstream, and the bloodstream cannot reach the pulp of your tooth. As a result, there are really only two ways to restore your healthy smile: a root canal or an extraction.
Can Root Canals Be Prevented?
Oftentimes, yes! That’s why we’re always encouraging our patients to incorporate healthy habits into their routine, starting with brushing consistently and extending to wearing a mouthguard while being active. It’s also important that you come to our Warrenton dental office every six months (or sooner if you start to experience warning signs of trouble, including pain when biting down).
Do Root Canals Make You Sick?
The short answer is “no.” However, the myth that root canals lead to illness continues to persist. This is largely due to poorly designed research conducted back in the 1920s, which claimed that this emergency dentistry treatment didn’t remove all of the bacteria. In addition to this theory being debunked for several decades now, there isn’t any scientific evidence to support it.
Why Do I Need a Root Canal if My Tooth Doesn’t Hurt?
If you aren’t struggling with a persistent toothache (or your toothache went away), you might assume that getting a root canal in Warrenton isn’t necessary. There are several reasons this isn’t the case, starting with the fact that pain isn’t the only sign of a badly decayed or damaged tooth. During your exam, Dr. Nayak also looks for other indications of trouble, including dark discoloration on the tooth. If that’s the case, he will bring it to your attention, review all of your treatment options, and share his recommendations.
How Can I Make My Root Canal More Affordable?
When it comes to root canals, there are two things patients are often concerned about: pain and price. Rest assured, we will go above and beyond to make your experience smooth, seamless, and stress-free. With the price specifically, we welcome several financial solutions, including dental insurance and flexible financing. We also offer an in-house savings plan to help our uninsured patients save as well.
