Dental insurance policies are not known for being easy to understand at first glance, and many people may not be sure what to think when they read words like “deductible” as they are viewing the terms of their plans. This can make it harder for some people to receive oral healthcare or discourage them from seeking it in the first place. Understanding how your policy works can make it easier for you to maximize your benefits and achieve better oral health, so here’s a brief guide to everything you need to know about deductibles.
What Is a Deductible?
In a dental insurance policy, a “deductible” refers to the amount of money you must pay out of pocket before coverage kicks in. Deductibles reset every twelve months, and while many insurance providers set their policies to take effect from January to December, some plans use different dates. Annual dental insurance deductibles some in two types:
- Individual: The deductible applies to the care of a single person.
- Family: The deductible applies to the care received by a family.
How Do Individual Annual Deductibles Work?
When your dentist’s office submits a claim to your insurance company, your deductible will be applied before your coverage takes effect. For example, imagine a covered treatment that costs $300. If your annual deductible is $50, you will pay this and be left with a balance of $250. If your policy covers your treatment by 50%, your insurance provider will pay $125 (half of $250), and the remaining balance will be included on your final bill. This amount is in addition to the deductible you have already paid.
Once your deductible has been met for the year, you will no longer be charged for it until your policy resets.
How Do Family Annual Deductibles Work?
Family annual deductibles work similarly to individual annual deductibles. Under a family plan, each family member is assigned an individual deductible that is included in the family deductible. For example, a family deductible of $250 for a family of five will be satisfied after five $50 payments have been made.
Dental insurance can be confusing at first, but knowing some terminology can make navigating it much easier. During your consultation, your dentist’s staff will be happy to go over your policy with you so you can get the most from the benefits you pay for.
